Kindle Vella is relatively new to the scene. Its claim to fame is that it gives authors a chance to write smaller, episodic material for their audiences on an ongoing basis.
I chose Vella to produce Making The Best of What’s Left: Turning a Million Dollar Nothing Into a Million Dollar Something.
For the most part, the project went seamlessly. If you’re familiar with Amazon KDP, it’s an easy transition over to Vella.
A suggestion: Rather than cut and paste content into the editor portion of Vella, it is highly recommended that you import your documents in .doc or docx format. That will save you a ton of time fixing localized formatting.
Here’s a much deeper resource on Kindle Vella:
These guys produce really good content and they are a valued resource.

Issues I Have With Vella
I do have two complaints for this format:
- The payment levels are miniscule.
- You have to continually feed the beast.
Kindle Vella Payments
Vella uses a system where the first three episodes of any Vella project can be read for free. No big deal; very similar to the KDP ready-for-free program.
After the first three episodes, readers have to purchase tokens to gain access to your material.
That’s where things get, as usual with Amazon, fuzzy.
You’re paid a portion of the tokens purchased to read your stuff.
And you have to be a math major to figure out how the hell you get paid after that.
Rumor has it that Vella authors are “subsidized” to some point with bonuses, but I haven’t seen anything of the sort of that yet.
Feeding The Kindle Vella Beast
Vella reminds me of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors.
In other words, Vella is always hungry, always ready for more content.
I guess it’s not really any different than any network, where content is king.
If you’re going to go down the Vella path and desire to have any success, I would suggest you be prepared to be tied to your computer or whatever your creation tool of choice is these days, because you’re going to have to be cranking content out on a regular basis.
Have you gone down the Vella path? If so, I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below.
